Selenium (Se) is a versatile chemical element from the group of chalcogens. The gray metallic form of Se is the most stable, exhibiting semi-metallic properties. Red selenium, non-metallic in nature, transitions into gray metallic Se at temperatures above 80°C. A third form, black selenium, also converts to gray metallic above 80°C. Selenium has six naturally occurring isotopes, five of which are stable.

Selenium holds significant economic value and is vital for all forms of life. Medically, selenium-based preparations are utilized to treat skin ailments. In anti-dandruff shampoos, selenium sulfide (SeS2) is used at a concentration of 1%. In the glass industry, selenium is employed in the production of selenium ruby glass, integral to signal and traffic lights. Additionally, selenium is in high demand within the semiconductor industry.
